Black culture today has been infiltrated and reshaped, saturated with impurity and immorality masquerading as freedom. The “anything goes” mindset—where every craving of the flesh is indulged without question—has taken root, distorting our values and exploiting our people. From pop culture to politics, many Black performers and leaders have been weaponized as tools of lustful promotion, pushing sex over marriage all to receive cash and Grammys in exchange for the destruction of their people.

As long as non-Blacks in positions of power continue to profit from hiring us to produce content that fuels their agendas, our community will remain driven not by purpose, but by compulsion—a culture controlled rather than in control. But before we point fingers, let’s turn inward. As long as we allow the desires of our flesh to lead us, we make ourselves easy targets for those who capitalize on our weaknesses. Our consumer-driven economy feeds off our impulsiveness, convincing us that indulgence equals freedom. Nowhere is this manipulation more blatant than in how sex is sold to us—relentlessly, aggressively, and without boundaries. The distinction between Black culture and sex culture has become almost nonexistent, as our sacredness is reduced to commodities for profit and pleasure.

But this isn’t where our story began. Our ancestors understood the sacredness of their bodies. They upheld values rooted in discipline, accountability, and spiritual purpose. Even those who fell short of these ideals did not glorify their actions as liberation but instead hid them in shame. While shame was never the solution, the absence of accountability we see today has created a new extreme: a culture where overt sexual behavior is glorified, packaged as liberation by Hollywood and political agendas.

This shift has birthed consequences that we can no longer ignore. Teen pregnancies are rampant, baby mama and baby daddy dynamics have become normalized, and sexual promiscuity is celebrated as a badge of honor. But let’s be real: there’s nothing liberating about being enslaved to the desires of your own flesh.

True liberation doesn’t come from indulging every craving—it comes from mastering them. Self-control, discipline, and accountability are the keys to reclaiming our identity, strengthening our community, and rising above the systems designed to exploit us. True freedom is found in self-mastery, not in submission to the flesh.

Reclaiming the Dating Pool: The Power of Abstinence

Abstinence may feel like an outdated concept in a culture that celebrates instant gratification, but PYOC’s Promise to Wait campaign proves otherwise. Spearheaded by Black youth, this movement boldly declares that abstinence isn’t just realistic—it’s revolutionary. It’s transformative. By preserving our bodies, we are reclaiming control, safeguarding our futures, and embracing the divine purpose God has placed on sex, marriage, and family.

Scroll through any social media platform, and it won’t take long—maybe a minute or two—before you see Black youth venting about the state of the dating pool. Many would say it’s no longer a pool but a polluted swamp. The issue isn’t that dating prospects are inherently bad people—it’s the sex culture that’s poisoning good morals. Unrealistic expectations, fueled by the glorification of lust, blind many to the true worth of a potential partner. This culture pushes the narrative that a significant other should satisfy the flesh above all else. If one partner refuses to cater to these shallow expectations, they’re often passed over for someone who will. The idea of waiting for marriage has become so foreign that it’s outright dismissed.

In the midst of this chaos, young men and women should prioritize seeking partners who value self-control and honor their sacredness. A person who respects their body and doesn’t offer it loosely without the covenant of marriage demonstrates strength, discipline, and purpose. To truly value oneself is to recognize that our bodies are not just flesh—they are sacred vessels, worthy of protection. Choosing abstinence is a way of refusing to compromise for momentary satisfaction because you value yourself and God’s plan for marriage more. Abstaining from sex until marriage is also a profound way to honor your future spouse because it demonstrates respect, self-control, and commitment to building a foundation rooted in trust and love rather than physical gratification.

Let’s be clear: waiting isn’t a weakness—it’s a weapon. What better way to disarm our oppressor than to control our own impulses? It’s how we reclaim the purity of our relationships, break free from the chains of a culture that glorifies lust, and safeguard the future of our community. The kids are watching us. They’ll either learn what love, respect, and self-worth truly look like from our actions, or they’ll be taught to devalue their own bodies and others’ through the lens of irresponsible sexual behavior. Together, we have the power to rewrite the narrative, reclaim our dignity, and restore the values that empower, uplift, and honor us as a people.

Empowering the Next Generation

Today’s Black culture often elevates fleeting pleasures over lasting purpose, glamorizing lust while discouraging the protection of what is sacred. But as we reclaim our values, we set an example for our youth to embrace true self-knowledge—knowledge that empowers them to make healthy decisions and take ownership of their bodies and sexuality.

Abstaining from sex is more than a personal choice; it’s a spiritual discipline rooted in Christian values, connecting us to God and a legacy of holiness. Yet, in recent generations, these values have been abandoned, leaving many to struggle under the weight of unchecked desires. The church, too often, has responded with guilt and condemnation, which has only deepened feelings of shame and alienation. This approach has failed to provide the guidance or hope needed to inspire lasting change.

We must move beyond judgment and uplift our community with the promises of God and a renewed vision of holiness. Psalm 82:4 calls us to “Rescue the weak and the needy” and to “Deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” This is the heart of the Promise to Wait campaign: offering hope, strength, and a pathway forward for a generation lost in a culture of compromise, from our youngest to our elders.

In 1 Corinthians 10:13, we are reminded, “God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation, he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” God has already equipped us with the tools to resist temptation and live in freedom. Through prayer, a strong community, and mutual accountability, we can rise above the noise, reject the lies of lustful culture, and honor the sacredness of our bodies. Together, we can restore a legacy of self-control, purpose, and holiness for generations to come.

The Path to True Freedom

Freedom is not found in indulging every desire but in choosing discipline and self-respect. By committing to abstinence, we build stronger families, healthier relationships, and a legacy that reflects God’s will.

The “Promise to Wait” campaign is a lifestyle of liberation, self-control, and empowerment. It’s about reclaiming our bodies and our culture, aligning with God’s design for marriage and families, and showing the world that abstinence is not only possible but transformative.

Scripture reveals that true empowerment is found in self-control, abstinence, and delayed gratification. These God-ordained principles liberate us from the tyranny of impulsive desires and align our lives with His perfect will, so that we no longer have to live as slaves to our flesh, but control our flesh in every way. By embracing these principles, we gain the spiritual strength to rise above our oppressors, overcome worldly temptations, live in obedience to God, and reclaim our God-given identity and purpose as a people.

Self-Control: A Spirit of Power and Love

2 Timothy 1:7 declares, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.”  This scripture teaches us that self-control is not something we muster on our own but a gift from God. It empowers us to rise above fleeting temptations and walk in strength and purpose. Modern culture often equates freedom with indulging every desire, but scripture reveals that mastery over our impulses is the real demonstration of power. By living with self-control, we embody God’s spirit of love, reflecting His character in how we care for ourselves and others.

Self-control, as outlined in Galatians 5:22-23, is a fruit of the Spirit and a marker of divine strength within us. It empowers us to resist momentary pleasures in favor of eternal promises. In exercising self-control, we take authority over our bodies and minds, demonstrating that we are governed not by the desires of the flesh but by the Spirit of God. This discipline not only strengthens our personal relationship with God but also sets an example for others, inspiring a ripple effect of spiritual renewal within our communities.

Abstinence: Honoring God with Our Bodies

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us: “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.” Let’s be real: the world is constantly trying to tell us who we are and what we’re worth. But here’s the truth they don’t want us to know—our worth was decided long before any of this. We’re royalty. Our bodies are temples, housing the Holy Spirit. That truth is more real and more powerful  than we could ever receive anywhere else.

Abstinence isn’t about “just saying no” or being perfect—it’s about saying yes to something bigger. It’s about refusing to let this world reduce us to trends, likes, and labels. They want us distracted, caught up in the hype of instant gratification, so we keep buying what they’re selling. But, we’re smarter than that. Choosing abstinence is like flipping the script, telling the oppressors of this world they hold no power over you.

The system is rigged. It feeds us images of lust, immorality, and destruction, all wrapped up to look like freedom. From music videos to movies to politics, they want us to believe that giving into the flesh is liberation. But we know better. Liberation is self-control. Freedom is owning your choices, honoring your body, and walking in alignment with the Creator’s purpose for your life.

When we embrace abstinence, we’re not just making a personal decision—we’re making a statement for our community. We’re saying that we see the traps, and we refuse to fall into them. By stepping away from the lies, we reclaim our power. We show the next generation that there’s strength in discipline and dignity in obedience to God’s Word.

And don’t think for a second we’re doing this alone. The Holy Spirit is with us, giving us strength, wisdom, and resilience to stay focused. This isn’t just about avoiding temptation—it’s about becoming warriors. Warriors for righteousness, for our families, and for our future.

Abstinence isn’t a limitation—it’s a revolution. It’s about breaking chains, rising up, and living with a boldness that shakes the system to its core. We’re not here to fit into a world that profits from our pain. We’re here to create a new one—a world where we honor our bodies, walk in purpose, and rise as the kings and queens God created us to be.

Delayed Gratification: Building Resilience and Character

Proverbs 25:28 warns, “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.” This imagery underscores the vulnerability that comes from living without discipline. Delayed gratification, on the other hand, builds spiritual fortification. Waiting for God’s timing, particularly in the area of sexual intimacy, allows us to develop patience, trust, and faith in His promises.

The culture of instant gratification thrives on exploiting desires, but scripture calls us to a higher standard. 1 Corinthians 9:27 emphasizes this, saying, “But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.” Delayed gratification reflects a disciplined life that aligns with God’s will and gives us credibility as witnesses to His truth.

Liberation Through Holiness

1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 proclaims, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor.” Contrary to modern culture’s message, freedom is not found in fulfilling every impulse but in submitting to the will of a holy God. Sanctification liberates us from the chains of this sinful culture, restoring dignity and purpose.

Rejecting the World’s Lies

Ephesians 5:3 commands, “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints.” This stark contrast between God’s standards and the world’s normalization of impurity highlights the importance of rejecting cultural lies. Pop culture markets impurity as empowerment, but scripture calls it sin. True liberation comes from living according to God’s design, not society’s fleeting trends.

By grounding our lives in the principles of self-control, abstinence, and delayed gratification, we align ourselves with God’s word and reclaim true empowerment. These practices are not outdated—they are countercultural acts of obedience that restore dignity, build resilience, and lead to deeper intimacy with God. In a world that glorifies instant gratification, let us stand firm in the transformative power of God’s truth and be examples of His holiness and love.

Let us preserve our purity, protect our future, and proclaim that God’s ways are the only path to true freedom. Will you take the Promise to Wait?

In our commitment to abstinence, we reclaim our worth, honor God’s will, and build a stronger, more liberated Black community.

Pick Your Own Cotton is more than a metaphor—it’s a call to reclaim our economic power and choose ourselves. For too long, Black dollars have flowed out of our communities, supporting other economies instead of our own. Integration gave us the right to choose where we live and spend, but far too many of us are still choosing to support systems that don’t prioritize our liberation. Every purchase, every business decision, is an opportunity to invest in Black communities and create generational wealth. It’s time to recognize that the economic injustices of slavery are still felt today, and without ownership, we're not far from that slave status. We must take responsibility for our community—supporting our own businesses, guiding our own youth, and uplifting our own people.

It’s time to pick our own cotton, not as laborers for someone else, but as creators of our own economic future, ensuring that every dollar works to rebuild what was lost and create a thriving, self-sustaining Black economy.
